Hard Choices for Europe and the US

This excellent article by George Friedman, founder of Geopolitical Futures, raises serious questions regarding the future relationship between the U.S. and Europe. He asks such questions as:

• Can the U.S. continue to provide the military muscle to protect Europe if Europe fails to meet its commitment for its own military?
• Should the U.S. continue to provide European security if the foreign policies of the U.S. and Europe are not aligned?
• Given the new Russian pipeline to Germany, has Russian outflanken NATO and would Germany who is so dependent on Russian gas be willing to fulfill its treaty obligations to countries such as Poland, Roumania, the Baltic nations, etc.?

The situation, in Mr. Friedman’s opinion is so serious, that he opined during an interview I heard, whether France and Germany would allow the passage of the U.S. military in case of Russian military action against eastern NATO members.
