The facts in this Wall Street Journal article Data Disprove the ‘Voter Suppression’ Myth will help you put into perspective the words of those who will continue to beat the drum of voter suppression. We have heard for years that asking for voter ID is an undue hardship to many and that it is all part of an attempt by one group (Republicans) to suppress the vote of other groups (Blacks, Hispanics, etc.).
Aside from the fact that such a claim of hardship is condescending towards the “suppressed” groups, it should be pointed out that a nation such as India which has many more minorities, languages and geographic problems than the U.S., has 100% voter registration. In fact, during the last national election in India, over 600,000,000 people voted, all using voter IDs! Apparently some folks think that the “suppressed” groups in the U.S. are not quite up to the skill level of the poorest citizen of India. This article is a bit of good news that should make most of us proud that voter registration and participation is increasing across the board. The one unspoken positive of voter ID would be the very real suppression of illegal voting by non-citizens, both legal and illegal.
